Review of Miller's Crossing (1990) by Nate W — 14 Aug 2012
It's one thing for a film to wear its narrative intricacies on its sleeve, but it's another thing for it to be confusingly hard to follow and proud of it. One can't help but detect such a sense of self-fulfillment in "Miller's Crossing", the Coen brothers' wittily eccentric but maddening plotted amalgam of gangster movie tropes, a grand sloppy kiss to the genre.
Even if the labyrinthine progression of double-double crosses and narrative twists proves frustrating, the wit of the performances and the polish of the Coen's mise en scene up-keeps the film's entertaining gait.
