Review of Miller's Crossing (1990) by Tristan G — 02 May 2009
Gangster, western, and war: 3 genres I have had my fill. That's why it's taken me so long to get to this early Coen brothers production, and I should've guessed that they would bring something fresh to a stale setting. While the directorial flair is more restrained than usual, the serpentine story elements slither in every direction, so complex that I was reminded of 'The Big Sleep.' However Barry Sonnenfield was still manning the camera helm so there are some trademark shots.
Gabriel Byrne is the best I've ever seen him as a completely self-serving bastard, except for one act of conscience that in a darkly ironic twist comes back to bite him as there are characters even MORE souless!
