Review of Millennium Actress (2002) by Crystal L — 30 Sep 2009
"Millennium Actress" is something of a departure from director Satoshi Kon's usual fare. Make no mistake, it's still a multi-layered, involving story, where the borders of reality are somewhat blurred, but there's none of the disturbing, psychological bent of "Perfect Blue," "Paranoia Agent," or even "Paprika.
" Instead, "Millennium Actress" evokes a more quiet sadness, as the audience is taken on a tour of the life of a retired actress, whose roles were perhaps more genuine than the life she lived off the set.
The story itself is a simple one about a promise made decades in the past, and attempts throughout the years to keep it, but it's told in such a way as to keep it engaging throughout. Not the best of Satoshi Kon's work, but still quite a good film.
