Satoshi Kon's love letter to Japanese cinema, and also to Setsuko Hara, arguably the legendary Japanese actress ever, is not the most conventional animated movie. But that's what we expected from Kon's work whenever we saw them.
A documentary crew decide to find a reclusive legendary Japanese actress and interview her about her work. The interviewer is a huge fan, and the film is told through his eyes. While she talks about her personal life and film life, the film mixes between old film scenes with a few surprising changes in between, all coming full circle by the end. And the key? The MacGuffin? What is it for? Pretty easy to guess that one before the movie ends...
