As far as political dramas go, there's not a lot that you can fault director Gus Van Sant's 'Milk' for. Truly memorable, honest performances (with special mention to Sean Penn as Harvey Milk) from the majority of the ensemble cast, results in a film that feels shockingly relevant and interesting.

Casual movie-goers should however be warned: Milk has a clear agenda it intends to promote, something that helps to justify the movie's focus on particulars in order to create a cinematic experience that is as accurate and true to its source material as possible.

This extreme attention to the actual course of events (and less on the actual emotional development of the characters) makes Milk a difficult movie to watch, as it definitely falls into the category of 'acquired taste'.

Nonetheless, it's hard to deny Milk's relevance as a excellent depiction of a crucial period in the evolution of human rights. Serious film-making for serious movie-goers.
