Great acting all around in this piece, Penn is fantastic (which is no surprise), Brolin is always solid, and James Franco, great job. Good storytelling when the end of the story is already known to most, so when a director and a cast can still make you want to watch, they must be doing a good job.

Scary to see some of the real life archive footage Van Sant has put in the film, and how in some ways, the more things have changed, the more they've stayed the same. Bittersweet film, but a success.
