4 stars is a great rating, but is this film truly great? Going to rock the boat here and say no, why? Because in many areas it lulls in the horrible land of the bio pic; sure the performances are fantastic there's no denying that - Sean Penn will get the Oscar nod -not that that's the only way to measure an actor's role - anyhoo a mere succession of events in a controversial and interesting person's life does not make a memorable or even brilliant film.

I enjoyed this film, despite the various slow sections, but whether I return to visit Harvey Milk in 6 months, a few years or whatever is a question I am still considering, at this time I think not. That said it's definitely worth seeing, not a bad performance amongst the who's who cast.

I may be alone in my thinking here but I could swear I heard a sprinkling of Sam (I am Sam) in Sean Penn's Milk performance...
