Review of Milk? (2012) by Cameron E — 23 Jun 2013
Gus Van Sant delivers an important thought provoking film. Sean Penn depicts Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in California. Penn delivers a powerhouse performance, perfectly cast in the role, while bringing a sense of hope and sadness to the character.
The supporting cast is also terrific, with Josh Brolin as Dan White, James Franco as Scott Smith and Emile Hirsch as Cleve Jones. The cinematography in the film is highly nostalgic, while Danny Elfman's music suits the film very well.
Dustin Lance Black's screenplay and Gus Van Sant's direction, as well as the film overall, respects Milk's memory, while showing the troubles he goes through in order to get into politics and make an important difference.
The film is well put together, while also showing us the differences that America can also make today surrounding certain beliefs.
