Review of Milk (2008) by Fastidious P — 21 Aug 2011
Not knowing anything about Harvey Milk, I found Gus Van Sant's portrayal of his activist/political years to be quite captivating.
Everyone knows Van Sant can be a fantastic director and he's definitely on his game here. Having said that, Milk is more a showcase of Sean Penn's voracious talent than anything else. He completely inhabits the role and leaves you feeling a great sense of loss at the end.
My only criticism of the film is it felt too compact. I understand the desire to focus on Milk's years as an activist (1970-1978), but I think a grander approach may have been even more engaging. Harvey Milk is an interesting figure, so showing us how he came to be so passionate about gay rights would've been interesting.
