Review of Mildred Pierce (1945) by Lindsey W — 29 Jun 2007
The dark side of the Horatio Alger, "bootstraps" myth. For everyone that has driven by the mansion on Los Robles in Pasadena, this is a window into the rotting lives of their inhabitants. Curtiz crafts an atypical noir - female protagonist, a femme fatale and an homme fatale, a mainstream setting, and the result is every bit as hard boiled as any Spade or Hammer mystery.
