Review of Midnight Special (2016) by Jv T — 25 Apr 2016
This throwback to early 80s sci-fi chase flicks maintains a contemporary feel to it that borders on mumblecore with its low key style - heavy on atmosphere, light on dialogue and low on exposition. If this is your kind of movie then you'll love it.
Director Jeff Nichols takes a less is more approach though he doesn't scrimp on the special effects when it counts. It's diverting in key scenes at the same time there are also a few slow moments that may test your patience.
The climax is visually beautiful yet you will either leave the theatre wondering what the point of the whole movie was, especially when you reflect on it.
