Review of Midnight Special (2016) by Sultan A — 29 Apr 2016
Representing the opposing sides of innocence & humanity through the various personifying characters, whose thoughts, as well as beliefs, are depicted with immense insight through their numerous doings, the film shows the several defining aspects of the neglected innocence & unrecognized power in this world, desired to be plied erroneously by the power-seeking individuals, along with many other human beings - the latter of whom, in spite of their lack of wrongdoings, are refused the powerful element, due to their very form of species & the latter's performed tasks - the element is strongly represented by the film's protagonist, who is a boy whose father finds out possesses special abilities, & rushes to guide him where he belongs.
Nichols invents a succession of event, that eventually converge in meaning, with immense dexterity. He develops each character through the depiction of each one's thoughts in an insightful manner, providing a message that's, overall, so impeccably told & meaningful. The skilled director proves his knack for visuals - along with the rest of the technical team - as well, as he guides viewers through the very suspenseful & defining events that not only thrill, but also reveal.
Michael Shannon does so f***ing well as the empowering figure's father, along with the child actor himself, who presents the child's many innocent characteristics through archetypal acting. Dunst, Edgerton, & Driver are unmitigatedly quintessential as the only individuals who believe, to some extent, in the child's power.
The creators of this film, as an entirety, form numerous contributing elements to the effectiveness of the film, allowing it to ultimately establish it's message & meaming within viewers' hearts. It surpasses the many genre clichà (C)s & meaninglessness, in the utter sense of the word, to prove apt at crafting what is, overall, more than a simple science fiction film. A revelation.
