Review of Midnight Special (2016) by Kudo A — 23 May 2016
Jeff Nichols fourth feature film much like his previous efforts; 'Shotgun Stories', 'Take Shelter' and 'Mud' is once again a very different type of genre bending/defying film that the writer/director like to take with every turn.
This particular film which follows a talented all star cast as well as some new faces, is a very strange and calm sci-fi mystery almost attributing the likes of Steven Spielberg or John Carpenter on a very exhilarating level of curiosity within it's encompassing mystery.
It may also be a very ambitious film, small in scale but great in impact, whilst also managing to keep viewers invested in until the very end. Refreshing enough to overt many cliches from viewer's expectations, also makes great use of it's setting, cinematography and acting abilities, even whilst averting the more bigger actors from roles better known to them in the past.
