Midnight Special is a wonderful mishmash of various genres. It's a low budget Sci-Fi film, brimming with a sense of mystery, lots of great suspense and a tender family drama at it's core. The actors deliver powerful, genuine performances, under Jeff Nichols' assured direction.

He shrewdly avoids exposition, while he establishes a steady pace and a grounded atmosphere, without ever losing the sense of wonder, in no small part due to the fantastic cinematography and score. By the end, some of the answers we get may be unremarkable, but that doesn't make the journey any less amazing.
