Despite having a core concept that could be the basis for an incredible thrill-ride of a movie, "Midnight Special" meanders about aimlessly from scene to scene, desperately hoping that it might find some sort of a point by the end of it's horribly bloated running time, instead only falling into the trap that so many science fiction stories do: thinking that it's smarter than it's audience, even if it's essentially a shoddy retelling of "E.

T", that does everything it did over 3 decades ago, but much, much worse.
