Review of Midnight Special (2016) by Clem A — 17 Apr 2016
MIDNIGHT SPECIAL-2016(PG-13)-April 16.
By:The Movie Guy.
Midnight Special, the latest film by director Jeff Nichols, stars Michael Shannon as Roy, a loving father desperately on the run with his young son Alton (Jaeden Lieberman.) Alton is not your average child, he has some mysterious capabilities which have earned him a cult following at the religious compound where he was born, The Ranch, as well as the attention of the NSA. Agent Paul Sevier (Adam Driver) suspects that Alton may be some kind of weapon. With the help of childhood friend, Lucas (Joel Edgerton) & Alton's mother Sarah (Kirsten Dunst), Roy & Alton are frantically eluding both factions while headed toward an unknown destination. As in his previous films, Mud & Take Shelter, writer & director Jeff Nichols has created a brilliantly crafted film, spare yet rich in nuance, relying on the considerable skills of the actors. Midnight Special is an intelligent & thought provoking work that defies simple categorization as a low budget sci-fi drama. Midnight Special is one of the best films I have seen this year & an early entry on my list of best films for 2016. MUST SEE FILM.
