Probably robert de niro's most straightforwardly entertaining film, midnight run transcends the derivative tag of the standard buddy movie courtesy of excellent lead performances, a memorable supporting cast, a quick fire foul mouthed script and martin brest's brisk direction.

the key lies perhaps entirely with de niro's approach: instead of playing up to the audience, as he does in the meet the parents films, here he instead applies his usual hardman persona to a comic situation, only to have it undone and exasperated bit by bit thanks to charles grodin's superbly dry, witty turn as embezzler jonathan mardukas.

danny elfman's upbeat score, drawing on his days as a band member in oingo boingo, is another positive element in a film guaranteed to leave you smiling.
