Review of Midnight Run (1988) by Jarett B — 22 Sep 2010
In the age when Bobby D didn't phone in comedic performances, he actually spent time with bails bondsmen in prep for the role. The result is eerily close to Jimmy 'The Gent' in GoodFellas (which is, well, AWESOME).
Place him alongside the second greatest actor of all-- wait... No, well, Grodin holds his own and actually (in the behind the scenes footage) cracked De Niro's method approach and got him to laugh! That's like stalling one of Hitler's rallies! Well played Grodin, well played sir.
Then there is Dennis Farina who can't do anything wrong, so, in the end, the cast is fantastic. Now Martin Breast would go on to do Gigli, but thank Jesus that would be a decade away. This is truly a great buddy picture and has you pulling for a relationship to develop between De Niro and Grodin just because they are so ass-backwards.
It reminds me of another comic gem, The In-Laws. Seeing these two films within a span of three weeks makes me want to hop on the 'Buddy Movie' train and ride it until Lethal Weapon 4! Great film.
