Review of Midnight Run (1988) by Sam M — 08 May 2015
Directed by the same guy who did the original Beverly Hills Cop (Martin Brest) this one has the feel and attitude of that crossed with the antics of Planes, Trains and Automobiles. DeNiro in one of his earliest, and best, comedic roles, still has teeth, and is paired perfectly with deadpan Charles Grodin.
Bounty Hunter and Bounty flee cross country from the FBI (Yaphet Kotto), mob boss (the late great Dennis Farina), and rival bounty hunter (John Ashton, Beverly Hills Cop) in a cross country race to deliver the bail jumper on time.
Not too much action, not too much forced comedy, but a solid blend, and what feel like natural character development grows between Grodin and DeNiro. If this were remade today, the body count would be huge, the explosions mindless, and the humour lacking.
..one of the best action buddy crime/cop comedies of the 80s. Well worth a watch.
