Review of Midnight Run (1988) by James H — 05 Feb 2011
Fast-paced and undeniably fun, Martin Brest's Midnight Run was a failure upon its initial release in 1988, but thanks to home video and frequent airings on cable in the 1990s, the film has certainly has been given a second life.
De Niro stars as a bounty hunter charged with the task of bringing mob accountant Charles Grodin from New York to L.A. in five days. What follows is an action/comedy/buddy/road movie that only the late-1980s could've produced.
De Niro and Grodin are at the top of their respective games, and have a terrific rapport with each other, and the supporting cast is uniformly excellent too: Yaphet Kotto, Dennis Farina, Joe Pantoliano, and especially John Ashton.
Brest's direction is deftly executed, and though there's not a whole lot of technical flair, Midnight Run has some incredibly solid technical skill, and comes at the pinnacle of the Classical Hollywood style revival of the post-Jaws, pre-Jurassic Park era.
