Review of Midnight Run (1988) by Nick F — 03 May 2009

I like how the sunglasses of the FBI kind of mimic a lot of those "trendy" sunglasses that are coming back.... I liked how DeNiro's character ripped on them. Some of them look pretty damn good, it's not just wearing the sunglasses alone that makes you sexy... in my opinion it's hard to pull off looking good in those fucking designer sunglasses, only a few people can really pull it off, I think.... and then for every one of those there are maybe 50 just wearing the damn things for the worst reasons!

Main character has Chicago history, didn't know that, that makes it fun :-).

Deniro with the cigarettes didn't work for me at first, actually no one with the cigarettes did... they probably got a Marlboro sponsorship but still.

If this film had been grittier it would have been better, I mean, the music at the beginning sets a goofy tone and the seriousness of the actions are confusing----they open with this like 70s/80s funk/pop/commercial vomit but it works, I mean it was the state of the art at the time, I guess :-).

It was kind of cheesy & cliche, but meant to be lighthearted and goofy... i.e. forging an FBI badge with a 7 year old boy next to you on an airplane watching you. It is exposition with a thoughtful and creative device used, but you definitely have to suspend your disbelief.

The acting of the rest of the cast did a great job, in some places it got campy which was funny but not momentously stirring, if you know what I mean.... very funny though...

Definitely not that much cursing.. no wonder it was #51.

Really heartwarming moment with DeNiro's character's family in chicago.

My buddy Joe Farina's dad plays the mob boss Serrano... that was cool to see his dad at work! I didn't know he was in this!

I like the relationship that develops over time between DeNiro and the guy he's carting... you can see over time what the two are doing, how the "criminal" picks at DeNiro over and over again.

Definitely has its zany moments and is very enjoyable, some of the plot devices are campy but it moves ahead nicely and the characters hearts really come through despite my very critical eye at first.

Heartwarming ending, also funny. go figure.
