Review of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) by Emanuele D — 04 Jan 2010
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was adapted from the best-selling book, and it my opinion, it should've stayed a book. The story is about Savannah, but the movie focuses one the murder trial of a powerful local man of influence (which makes up the second half of the book). The engrossing story is incredibly condensed and seems kind of disjointed. It's a true story, but all of the characters in this movie version seem like cardboard cutouts.
Given the talented list of actors, it's surprising how uninteresting this movie is. Kevin Spacey sports a ridiculous mustache and attempts to use some semblance of a Savannah accent. Jude Law doesn't do a whole lot and actually looked kind of scrawny in his tight t-shirt.
I wasn't a big fan of the directing or the writing. There were too many overexaggerated reactions and explanations. Disappointing overall.
