Review of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) by Paul D — 22 Jun 2018
At the heart of this movie is a solid murder mystery and courtroom drama about a complex and believable relationship gone bad. All around that core are extravagant and odd characters and a beautiful, charming city that the authors are desperately trying to pass off as extravagant and odd as well.
It's a rich, complex situation that held my interest but which afterwards left me feeling that too much time was spent on sub-plots that didn't go anywhere, specifically the journalist's romance and the cotillion scenes.
That made the movie slower and longer than needed. I have the feeling that Eastwood and especially the screenwriter were trying too hard to be faithful to the complex, detailed best-selling original book.
Spacey and Cusak are excellent, and they have a very good, vivid supporting cast.
