Review of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) by Bill P — 14 Jun 2008
This movie was really bland. Man comes to Georgia. He makes friends with a gay man. Man kills lover. Man goes to trial. Man gets off due to self defense. Man has a heart attack. I wasn't exactly sure why it happened like it did.
Think it had to do with the weird psycho woman in the graveyard. John Cusack's character ran into a lot of side characters that were esstentially unimportant to the film. The main plot was the murder and the court trial but they dragged the movie out by following Cusack around and trying to play with his thoughts and emotions.
Ultimately it doesn't lead to anything and it was just an attempt to cleverly tell the story from an outsiders view point. This story is told in Cusack's point of view (Can't believe he didn't get top billing) and it just wasn't worth it.
Movie could have been shorter but they built way too much into John Kelso. I just didn't like it very much but I wasn't really bored. Just didn't think it was anything special. The acting was good.
I enjoyed our top two actors performances and Jude Law was fun to watch in this one. I don't know, decent movie but I wouldn't call it a must-see.
