Review of Midnight Express (1978) by Jonathan K — 15 Dec 2010
Prison films such as The Shawshank Redemption and Brokedown Palace definitely owe to this film as a launching pad, however both surpass in effectiveness. Midnight Express is a good film, even a great film by 1978s standards, but its not very precise in direction and the spacing of its acts.
Brad Davis as the lead Billy Hayes ranges from over-acting to caricatures and while his psychological journey as a prisoner is compelling and at times believable, ultimately the hollywood-ized ending ventures too far from the reality of the matter.
