Review of Midnight Express (1978) by Songeehn C — 29 Nov 2009
Although based on a true story, there is a lot of embellishment in Billy Hayes' mamoirs of life in a Turkish prison. Oliver Stone adapts the screenplay well though, and Alan Parker's directorial style is harsh and brutal. Brad Davis is excellent in his film debut, but full accolades have to go to the magnificent John Hurt.
Also noted are Giorgio Moroder's music and Irene Miracle, although she only has two key scenes (the second of which is deserved of classic status, and has been aped in many films, inc. Jim Carrey's The Cable Guy).
Despite some exaggerations, anyone who watches Midnight Express will undoubtedly think twice about smuggling drugs across the borders (especially of Middle Eastern countries).
