Review of Midnight Cowboy (1969) by John K — 01 Jul 2009
After Bonnie and Clyde, Midnight Cowboy effectively displays a harshness and bleakness that was new for American mainstream films (even though Schlesinger is a Brit). 1960s New York represents the potential for extravagant wealth and extreme poverty.
Every one of its inhabitants strives to get the best he can. This film has such a confidant voice. We root for Joe Buck, but we also see his folly. It's a tough town.
