Review of Midnight Cowboy (1969) by Eric M — 26 Mar 2013
This movie is incredibly dated and has several moments that, while they may have seemed hip and avant-garde at the time, haven't aged particualrly well. (The "freak-out" scene where Joe and Rizzo attend a party populated by Warholesque hipsters might be the low point.
) The many flashback and fantasy sequences also detract from the viewing experience, instead of enhancing it. Still, Voight and Hoffman are both excellent and the movie's sexual frankness- though somewhat tame by today's standards- was pretty bold for its era.
A flawed but worthy film.
