Review of Midnight Cowboy (1969) by Kim B — 26 Jun 2018
One of the saddest and most disgusting movies Ive ever seen. Set in an unforgiving New York City mostly in the slummy area. Its a tale of misfortune while trying to chase a dream. You could feel the apathy from most people esp in New York and the wretchedness of the main leads.
The main cowboy lead was so naïve and innocent, completely opposite his street-smart con friend. The style of shooting was awesome from the director with some great visceral imagery and I loved the soundtrack.
However, there was a lot of parts of the film that were left void, We barely got to know Joe's background or what happens to him at the end. Obvi there was some trauma there from his upbringing. Im sure the book fills you in more and Id be interested to read it.
Great performances from both leads here. The main win in this film is probably the great tale of an unlikely friendship between two people pushed aside by the world, their misfortunes pulling them together.
What a depressing ending, but I kinda figured it would end like that poor Ratso Rico. He made it to his heaven tho in the end I guess. I would like to think people are better off than that now with social services.
