Review of Midnight Cowboy (1969) by Stephen E — 18 May 2012
John Schlesinger may have won an Oscar for his work here, but it's his direction that destroys the tone of an otherwise good script. There's no need to be so self-indulgent and visually excessive with such a simple story.
Half of the time it doesn't even feel as though it belongs. In fact, if you were to take away all of the unnecessary camera and editing tricks, "Midnight Cowboy" would be a somewhat enjoyable film.
It isn't worthy of the praise that it has received (or its original rating), but there are several noteworthy scenes and quotes. Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman each give solid performances as the film's main characters.
Actually, the two of them are what make "Midnight Cowboy" so watchable.
