Review of Micmacs (2009) by David F — 29 Apr 2011
Jeunet is one of my favorite directors. He has one of the best knacks for visuals in the business, he's an imaginative storyteller, and he can shoot a frame like nobody's business. As far as Micmacs goes, he's got all of those things but storytelling.
The story just doesn't entirely work for me. It frantically moves along with characters that are sometimes almost too whimsical to enjoy. His trademark whimsicality feels forced here and The story doesn't pack a punch because of this.
Though, the film is visually gorgeous as expected. The locations used are fantastic. It's a decent film, but Jeunet can do better. In fact, he has with every other film in his repertoire. This is what disappointment looks like.
