Review of Micmacs (2009) by Augustine H — 10 May 2013
Certainly an interesting and fun watch but it left me feeling slightly empty- it's like a medium pizza that's enjoyable throughout but when it's finished you'd wished it had been a large instead but you are still hungry. What's missing here is a basis to this film that isn't simply an attempt to be cute, interesting or as everyone else on here seems to call it- whimsical.
For a short everything about Micmacs is spot-on and it would certainly be memorable but for a feature length piece I expect a bit more than someone trying to make me smile throughout by having an air of humour and few actual jokes. It's like going to a comedy show where a comedian seems like a really interesting and good person and the crowd responds to that but the jokes are average and far from special. Too much style and not enough bite.
It's wrong of me to view this as strictly a comedy, it should be more but the reality is that nothing more is given here- very little is truly memorable and that's a waste of a good premise in my view. Still a good watch but far from what it should have been.
