Review of Michael Collins (1996) by Paul N — 12 Jun 2007
If you're Irish its almost part of the cirriculum in school to watch this film. A thrilling retelling of one the most important figures of the Irish revolutionaries in the 1920's, the film is a fantastic achievement. Not only is it fairly accurate, it is also entertaining, humourous, epic in scale, impressive in all departments and holds up as a film in its own right.
Few Irish can judge as a film on its own merits, indeed I would put 5 stars if not for a moments thought, but like Braveheart which captured the Scottish imagination, Liam Neeson puts in a wonderful performance as Michael Collins and lets an entire nation feel pride, regret and hope. Great film making as it should be in any country I think.
