Review of Michael Collins (1996) by Cal ( — 19 Oct 2007
An amazing historical epic about the Irish rebellion in the early 1900s and the prominent figure in said rebellion: Michael Collins (Neeson). After Michael Collins is captured by British troops after an attempted overthrow, he is released years later and vows to continue his uprising against the British and free Ireland of the British chokehold.
The film chronicles the events from 1916 until well into the 1920s, including Bloody Sunday and the Easter Uprising. It's hard to describe the film, as a simple plot synopsis does not do justice to the series of events that occur in rapid succession throughout the running time.
Liam Neeson is brilliant like always here, with the supporting cast including such superb actors as Alan Rickman and Aidan Quinn. For those wanting to learn about the brutal battles and prominent figures of the Irish, you must see this movie.
My only warning: the film is excessively violent and brutal, with lots of profanity. A film worth seeing!
