Review of Miami Blues (1990) by Stephen C — 19 Mar 2012
If like me you think Alec Baldwin is an underated actor then you will love his performance is this film based on the novel by Charles Willeford.
Baldwin plays Junior a deranged killer who likes to steal pepoles IDs and kill Hare Krishnas by breaking their fingers.
After shacking up with Susie (Jennifer Jason Leigh excellent ) a young hooker he settles downn into a weird doemestic vibe while all the time commiting more outlandish crimes .
It helps that he stealS the badge and gun of Sgt Hoke Moseley played by Fred Ward .
What follows is a game of cat and mouse as Junior fights crime the only way he knows how and Mosely tracks him determined to get his Badge and Gun and his false teeth which Junior has also pilfered .
Fred Ward is very funny as Mosely ,but its Baldwin who steals the film here ,his performance as Junior reels you in and although he is very very dangerous you cant help but enjoy his methods of fighting crime.
The film has some gory moments most notably some missing fingers but this is a noir drama comedy so you get what you expect in my view .
An underated gem of a crime film which works due to its casting and its oddball approach.
