Review of Metropolitan (1990) by Mark H — 23 Jun 2008
On my second or third viewing of "Metropolitan", I began to realize that the self-conscious, written-out dialogue is a specific device, much like in Woody Allen's films, and that these characters are actually quite funny if you allow them to be "scripted".
This movie is not for everyone, but keep in mind that Whit Stillman doesn't take his characters quite as seriously as they take themselves, and therein lies much of the humor.
