Seeing that Whit Stillman had taking an extensive film making hiatus (this year's Damsels in Distress is his first film in over a decade), many forget that at one time he was catering to the niche audience that is now saturated by the likes of Wes Anderson, and this debut film is a fine example of.

A satire about upper-class collegians, Metropolitan is certainly talky and light on physicality, but it really matters not as the acting and script are so good. While it might not exactly be heart warming, Metropolitan has aged quite well since it's release in 1990, and it's as fine an entry point as any to the realized filmography of Stillman's.
