Review of Metropia (2009) by Adam W — 30 May 2010
Metropia is one of the most visually unique films I've seen in a long time, utilizing a photo montage and CGI technique Metropia looks stunning from start to finish.
This is about the only good thing I can say about the film. With many films like this Metropia suffers from an extreme case of style over substance, with a script that sounds like it was based on a rejected matrix spin off.
With a story that follows "dystopian literature by numbers" , the tale is extremely tired and predictable. With it's typical "everyman" sap who is discontent with his life and isn't part of the walking drones of the populous paired with a mysterious edgy female who he follows as the truth behind the world is revealed. Evil corporation, Voices in heads blah.
With unenthusiastic voice overs from Vincent Gallo and Juliette Lewis, the drab script doesn't receive any enhancements.
With the only compelling and likable character being a gold fish, you begin to realise this film really has it's problems. It makes no sense to me how someone can invest so much time in crafting such stunning visuals to have it fall flat on it's face with such an uninteresting and pointless story.
Very disappointing.
Better than 9 worse than Metropolis.
