This is an interesting choice by talented documentary filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky (previously known to me for their fascinating crime documentaries Paradise Lost and Brother's Keeper).

They had the good (or bad) luck to be making a documentary about Metallica during the making of their St Anger album in the aftermath of the Napster controversy, only to have lead singer James Hetfield check himself into rehab and disappear for nearly a full year.

We get a lot of interesting insight into the day-to-day lives of the thinking man's metal band, and also into their interactions with a Svengali psychiatrist, brought on to coach them through the creative process.

Definitely recommended if you're a fan of the band.
