Review of Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004) by Lyn G — 11 May 2011
If you're a fan, you'll like the behind the scenes footage and the revealing glimpses at metal royalty. I am a fan, but loved the documentary for other reasons, especially the producer's wry ability to catch the band off guard.
Hetfield and Ulrich are too human, frequently coming off as self absorbed prima donnas. The cameras also caught raw interviews with former members Mustaine and Newsted. The most entertaining was the juxtaposition of blue collar rock producer and stand in bass player Bob Rock with the band's $40,000 a week ubiquitous therapist.
Scenes of Metallica "going deep" on the couch was reason enough to watch this. Since I am one of the few to like "St. Anger" it was also fun to watch creativity in action for this very unique album: fun to watch Hetfield growling out lyrics while his four year old son sat in his lap!
