Review of Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004) by Paul B — 04 Jan 2008
I like documentaries and I love love LOVE Metallica. They are the reason I learned to play guitar. I honestly feel like my life would be different if it weren't for this band. That's weird, but true. Their music helped me escape alot of crappy times in my teen years. So it kinda goes without saying that I loved a 2+ hour documentary about the band.
However, I don't think you have to be a Metallica fan (or even a rock music fan) to enjoy this movie.
Some people might complain that it's just a bunch of guys arguing (which some of it is), but I feel like it gives a great insight into what it's like to be in a hugely successful band. That's the coolest part of the whole movie; they're still just a bunch of regular guys who want to write music that people will like. They still use music to express themselves which is something alot of current bands don't do anymore. Metallica isn't in it for the money; they don't need it anymore. They play because they love it. Seeing that was so cool.
It's also really great to get a glimpse into these guys' lives (childhood, family, wives, kids, etc.).
Unlike most people, I really liked the St. Anger album. It's especially good when you're really pissed off (hence the title...). That helped me like the movie even more, but regardless it's a good film.
A solid rental for non-fans. A must-see for fans.
