Review of Metal: A Headbanger's Journey (2005) by Seth M — 25 Jul 2009
"Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" is a love letter to the genre from a superfan. The entirety of the film consists of the director traveling the globe and groveling at the feet of the metal gods. The audience will learn a bunch of facts about the various subgenres of metal, but a lack of conflict makes this the movie equivalent of a biased wikipedia entry.
The director scores interviews with several metal luminaries, who must have more stories than they know what to do with. Yet they end talking about their biggest shows as Dunn sits in awe.
The other portions of the movie are a history of metal and not quite a the journey promised by the title. It is akin to taking metal 101, as a 1 credit college course.
Fans of metal will find a good deal to learn about the genre, and get some metal education. Non-fans will still be baffled.
