Review of Messengers 2: The Scarecrow (2009) by Kristina K — 16 Nov 2010
Messengers 2: The Scarecrow is a prequel film that fails on every single level. Sub-standard writing, amateurish direction, implausible scenarios and terrible acting all culminate in one very forgettable horror movie. Another seemingly overlooked problem is the confusing lack of what the title proudly proclaims...where ARE the so-called "Messengers" (the ghostly antagonists so prevalent in the original film) and the fear-soaked dread that they previously created? It appears as if the filmmakers blindly concocted a tale that has nothing whatsoever to do with the franchise and have simply attached the name of a formerly successful effort almost as if it were an afterthought. The always watchable Norman Reedus (The Boondock Saints 1 & 2, Blade 2) does an admirable job as the Scarecrow-besieged hero (a Scarecrow creature done reasonably well I might add) but not even his talent can save this film from the dud-movie scrap heap. Perhaps Norman's character should have screened this film to the pesky crows that were plaguing his farm...it's very quality is enough to scare any living thing away.
A woeful film but I still give it one star for the always excellent Norman Reedus.
