Review of Mesrine: Public Enemy #1 (2008) by Mike M — 02 Aug 2010
This Mesrine is no longer the sleek criminal chameleon/globetrotting celebrity we witnessed in the first film, rather a blustering, earthbound rogue - pedantically insisting on people getting his name right, and prepared to kill for a better press - whose getaways aren't as quick as they might once have been.
.. If doubts remain about the precise veracity of some of this tallest of tales - and that opening screed of text really does look a liability in the context - they are at least tied in here with Mesrine's shambling, semi-professional MO.
At the end of the four hours, it's become clear this was a jobbing criminal who in the absence of a masterplan - either through a lack of smarts, or an excess of them - was simply making it all up as he went along.
