Review of Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) by Clifton F — 26 Aug 2007
I actually viewed all of the Maya Deren: Experimental Films DVD, but there isn't an option to do an umbrella review, so I'm doing it under this, her most well-known (and best) work. Meshes of the Afternoon is a compelling and visually arresting brief glimpse into a woman of fragmented and sexually charged impulses that leads to a disturbing and pretty inevitable climax.
A really well done surrealist flash film. The rest of her work varies widely in terms of sucess, but also in terms of ambition. Her other work mostly concerns itself with human movement and the choreography of people through everyday events.
It's less about meaning and more about movement and form, but since the images themselves are more prosaic than gripping, they can be a bit of a slog, and as such, for me, are far less interesting.
