Review of Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) by Fernando C — 20 Jun 2008
One of those beautiful and odd films that make you look at film as high art (if you don't already: I don't why it's hard for some to view cinema as they view literature or even theater). "Meshes of the Afternoon" is as great a poem as those studied in classrooms worldwide, and it has truly made me believe film should be in basic education programs.
Why? Because it's an art that can help us understand our concerns and thoughts visually -immediately, as in this surreal, provocative dreamscape. Erotic and disturbing at the same time, "Meshes.
.." moves and sound with a peculiar rhythm, suggesting countless images and feelings like few films can in ten times its running time. This short masterpiece puts you in a trance, and if you let yourself be carried away by its unforgettable imagery, you'll be very glad you found it.
