Review of Mermaids (1990) by Jami L — 13 Jul 2009
I am flipping through the movie channels, and I come across Mermaids. Even though I have seen this movie about a thousand and three time, and I own the DVD, what do I do, I sit and watch it.
I can't help it, I am weak. Mermaids is a stupendous film. It is a film that can be appreciated by all and should be embraced.
What is not to love about this film? There is a noteworthy cast, giving memorable and fun performances. Who does love Cher, Winona Ryder, and a young and oh so adorable Christina Ricci? Bob Hoskins also gives a great soul to Lou and it has Jake flipping Ryan ( Michael Schoeffling ) in it!
The story is a pleasant one. Coming of age, the loss of innocence, wanting something so bad you can taste it, afraid of loving too much and getting hurt, and the relationship between a mother and her daughters.
This film also has a prodigious soundtrack. Peggy Lee, Jackie Wilson, Shelley Fabares, Betty Everrett, The Four Seasons, Doris Troy, Smokey Robinson, Leslie Gore, Santo & Johnny... I am beginning to sound like one of those Time Life CD collection advertisements, solid sounds of the 60s Groovy Baby. I am a sucker for the oldies.
If you haven't seen Mermaids, watch it. You will laugh, you will cry and you just may fall in love.
" Oh I am going to hell for sure. Here he is talking his poor dead mother, and I can't help wishing his hands were unbuttoning my dress.".
