Review of Mephisto (1981) by Tibor B — 17 Mar 2009
Possibly didn't catch me in the right mood, as I was underwhelmed by Szabo's very highly acclaimed film. Brandauer is exceptional as the actor who becomes the darling of the rising Nazi party, while his colleagues and friends are fleeing Germany.
It is very thought provoking about the role of art in society and the Faustian corruption of fame and desire for attention, but I found it quite slow going at times.
