Review of Men, Women & Children (2014) by Charlie T — 12 May 2015
OK, so here it goes, I was really excited because I had read the book back in 2011. So the characters, although most stay faithful in personality to the book there is some small issues of characteristics, such as Mrs.
Truby she was supposed to be a slightly larger woman at this point in her life which is part of what caused the issue in her story line. Strangely enough Adam Saddler indeed do a good job in his lonely craving youth and intimacy role.
Jennifers naturally up tight personality traits was actually a really good Choice for Patty, I think second option could have been Katharine Heigle. The voice narration though nessacary at times to those who don't know how the characters are supposed to be, but it comes at times where it's not needed and doesn't when it really should, certain characters and bac stories are omitted for some reason which really developed as to how certain characters are the way they are.
My biggest gripe for certain is the lack of the romantic growth that was supposed to happen in our main couple of the atory . one second they are there, the next they disappe . There is a major storyline difference that is hard to get around, this is a story also meant to show the dark underbelly of puberty, which for most happens in middle school.
This does pose such a large issue especially since much of the topic is adult in nature so in order to portray it in "real life acting" would be rather difficult. The movie plays out screens that could actually be omitted.
Based on many of the reviews it seems a mix of directing and self preservation caused everyone to think this is a movie about technology ruinining our lives. First in the defense it is based on a book that I read in 2011, and off the top of my head don't remember the published date, so of course in that aspect it is very much behind the power curve.
But the story is truly meant to highlight that darker side of youth that we seem to turn a blind eye to. I give the movie 3 stars for the reason the characters in it stayed true to character but for overall outcome plus added ending and lack of certaien characters being present and a complete shift as to the main focus point.
