Review of Men of Honor (2000) by Donna . — 07 Jan 2008
I found this movie about Carl Brashear, the first African American, then also the first amputee, US Navy Diver quite inspiring. His poor back story was touching and all the cast did an amazing job. Yet the movie has its flaws and was often overly melodramatic. There were also cringey moments of macho nonsense eg, Billy and Carl giving themselves nose bleeds to prove how tough they are. The love story between Brashear and Jo was underdeveloped and there's a brilliant, yet pointless performance by Charlize Theron, who doesn't add anything to the story.
Overall an average film about an extraordinary man.
